Campaign Story 2009

Kick-Off 2009
Monday, August 31, 2009

NOW more than ever … Campaign Co-Chairs Tammy and Shawn Mungar were joined today by many donors, supporters, Board Members, volunteers, community and workplace representatives, families, past campaign chairs, special event organizers and agency representatives.

The Kick-Off event was hosted at Leon Leclair’s Hidden Hills Farm and included entertainment, lunch, displays, a hot air balloon, animals and lots to see and do. Event sponsors included Farmers Feed Cities and the Bushels of Hope Campaign, Pioneer Hi-Bred Ltd., Pure Choice Water, the WAMBO Committee, Hyland Seeds, The Dutch Market and many many more. As a result of these sponsors the entire event was “cost free” - no donation dollars were required to support the launch.

UNITED WAY ANNOUNCES 2009 CAMPAIGN CO-CHAIRS

On May 05, 2009 the announcement was made that this year’s Campaign Co-Chairs are Tammy and Shawn Mungar.

Born and raised in the Emeryville/Belle River area, Tammy moved to Chatham permanently in 1995. All of her extended family is from the Chatham area.

Shawn was born in London and spent a number of years in Blenheim, London and then eventually moved back to Chatham. His extended family resides primarily in the London/Grand Bend area.

Tammy has been a Board Member with Big Brothers Big Sisters of C-K and for the past four years served as their Vice President. She is a recent member of United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council and for many years has helped organize and lead Union Gas volunteer teams in several community Helping Hands activities. She is a volunteer with United Way’s Good Neighbors Program - especially the fall Operation Cover Up project – and has worked to support food drives, parade floats and fundraising.

This year, Shawn Mungar celebrates 20 years with the Chatham-Kent Police Services. His career has included Community Patrol, Police Dog Services handler, Criminal Investigations, Street Crimes and he is currently an Acting Sergeant. He has been a member of the Police Association Executive for the past 5 years. He has been the liaison officer for East Side Pride, co-chaired the recent Citizens’ Police Academy, and is always willing to take on “various roles to assist and support his fellow members”.

Tammy and Shawn have three girls. Rebecca in London, is their 17 year old, finishing high school, and looking forward to attending one of the four universities where she has been accepted. She plans on entering an education program. Rebecca also loves theater and this year she helped to successfully stage manage an entire production!

Alexandria is a 10 year old super hockey fan. She enjoys most sports – hockey and baseball being her two favorites - and is a “fierce wall of defense” for the Chatham Outlaws.

Carly is their 8 year old “spitfire and energy source for the whole family”. She also is a big hockey and baseball fan but enjoys life in the pool for most of the summer!

Rebecca, Alexandria and Carly have Tammy and Shawn’s full support be it hockey, baseball or just camping out and the Mungar girls are all very active with Tammy and Shawn in the community. They have helped with various landscaping and community improvement projects, the Chatham Minor Ball Association, and running the canteen at the Big Sisters Wedding Show every January. In addition, for two years they have helped welcome and host Christina from Chernobyl. It is very clear - helping others is a part of the entire family's way of life.

Carly and Alexandria wrote a poem that demonstrates this year's theme and message:

Now more than ever …
We are counting on you.

Now more than ever …
This is the time to reach out.

Now more than ever …
We not only need to have lives changed in the community, and need to take time to reach out to bring change to each others lives

Now more than ever …
We need to understand that we are all family and face this campaign together.

Now more than ever …
We need to consider the value of lending a helping hand, of what one dollar more can do.

Now more than ever …
We need to think about what this community means to each of us and do the best we can to live United!

The 2009 goal will be announced at the Fall Kick-Off. Stay tuned for an upcoming announcement of that date.
